This is our second feature on Adaptive Micro Systems. When speaking with the company two years ago, we talked about its pioneering efforts in LED indoor and outdoor displays, the industry boom in the nineties and the difficulties in 2009-10 which almost crippled the company. The growth of the company had been initially linked to the LED indoor display market, but in 2000, it ventured into the outdoor market before investing heavily in developing electronic billboards. The last two years have been good to Adaptive Micro Systems, and new product lines have been – and will continue to be – developed. We spoke with President Dennis Thums to find out more.

The company developed and introduced a new 7.8 mm pitch outdoor display product that has garnered great reviews. Community involvement is core to the university’s approach. “We are very engaged in our community. I think almost every student graduates from here having done either service learning courses—where part of the course is actually engagement in the community—or they have multiple internships or other experiential learning opportunities. We feel it is really important to move from classroom to career through experiences within the workforce and within the community [while also] giving back.”

Although settlement in Clarendon County dates back to the late 1700s, it was in 1939 that the area was developed and redefined in a way that would greatly improve the livelihood of residents and businesses in rural South Carolina. Lakes Marion and Moultrie are manmade lakes that cover of 100,000 acres and are operated by South Carolina’s leading power company: Santee Cooper. The lakes changed the landscape and were intended to create hydroelectric power, but became assets that would help the area to grow, attracting both residents and tourists.

A new inland port is being built 15 miles away in Dillon, South Carolina, attracting new industry to the area. “We think this is going to have tremendous impact on the region,” says Economic Development Director Dr. Julie Norman. In addition to capitalizing on the tourism industry, county officials are working hard to bring more manufacturers into the community, which has historically been dependent on the textile and tobacco industries. “We are going to continue focusing on manufacturing, particularly now that we have the prospect of an inland port coming soon.”

Watauga County derives its name from a Cherokee translation of ‘shining water’ or ‘peaceful water.’ Its county seat and largest town is Boone, named after American explorer and frontiersman Daniel Boone. Our companies manufacture chemicals, refrigerators, wheels, air filters, wood products, and various textiles including carpet fibers, medical gauze, and nonwoven materials. We also have a large distribution operation in the county. We run the gamut,” says McLean.
