A Small College Producing Big Thinkers

A Small College Producing Big Thinkers

Bethany College

There is always some debate over where the oldest private college in the state of West Virginia is. There are plenty of stories about very old elementary schools that morphed into state teachers colleges, but Bethany College is the only private college that has continually been a college in the state. Since 1840, Bethany College has been a highly contemporary institution based in the tradition of the liberal arts.
~
Bethany College’s founder, Alexander Campbell, was instrumental in the founding of several other colleges across the country including Texas Christian University, Rice University, and many others. He was deeply moved by the liberal arts education movements of the nineteenth century, and he was a great fan of Thomas Jefferson as well as the University of Virginia. All of these inspirations were combined into a college that was founded as part of a movement to educate people so that they could make a difference in the world around them.

Catapulting the Bridge Inspection Industry into the 21st Century for a Safer Public Infrastructure

Infrastructure Preservation Corporation

The Infrastructure Preservation Corporation (IPC) is delivering technology based inspections to upgrade the quality and effectiveness of bridge maintenance. The result: a safer public infrastructure.
~
For the first time, IPC’s infrastructure inspection services are utilizing modern technology and robotics to provide DOT (Department of Transportation) the quantitative data they need to properly allocate assets. By updating inspection methods, IPC can help make the infrastructure safer, extend the service life of our infrastructure assets and ultimately save billions of dollars in untimely replacements. The firm’s technology and services will be critical to government officials looking to revamp a troubled and aging transportation infrastructure.
~
IPC products and services produce data far superior to anything available to date. “We’re a professional services company,” said IPC Vice President Doug Thaler “We’re also a robotics engineering company. The primary focus of our company is to develop inspection services that provide asset managers condition assessments that contain real quantitative data.” By understanding the current condition of the United States’ infrastructure (bridges and high mast light poles) with real quantitative data, the DOT can conduct repairs that will extend their service life.

Their portfolio is stocked with impressive projects, including the Crown Fountain in Chicago, Longwood Gardens in Pennsylvania, and even the revitalization of the fountains at the Château de Versailles.
~
Crystal Fountains was established by Roger L’Heureux in 1967, and made its debut at the Montreal Expo supporting artist Gerald Gladstone before the company was even incorporated. Over the decades, Crystal Fountains has grown significantly in both size and impact, thanks in great part to OCAD graduate Doug Duff, in whom Roger placed a great deal of trust and faith. Together, the pair managed to fashion their first few projects, including the enduring water feature in the Toronto Eaton Centre, and the rest, as they say, is history.

Burgers, Robots, and the Minimum Wage

Burgers, Robots, and the Minimum Wage

Automation in the Food Industry

Facing considerable competition in today’s marketplace, it is imperative that companies do whatever it takes to boost profits, especially in the food processing and restaurant industries, where speed, consistency, efficiency, and health standards are paramount, and profit margins are slim. To remain cost-competitive, food-related businesses – from large-scale processing plants to fast-food franchises – must balance quality with price, not always an easy feat.
~
In recent years, the issue of food costs and wages for restaurants has become a hot topic. For massive chains like McDonald’s to sell a basic hamburger at a profit — a thin beef patty topped with ketchup, mustard, onion, and pickle slices on a bun — for less than $1.50 (depending on location), there must be painstakingly precise calculations between costs of production, including ingredients and labour. With the bulk of fast-food workers receiving minimum wage, this balance was rarely an issue until 2015, when a pushback was initiated by low-income persons, many of them employed in the fast-food sector, for an increased minimum wage of $15 per hour.
